Out with the old, in with the new

Out with the old, in with the new

As the new year approaches, it heralds a period of reset—a time when the previous year's goals and resolutions make way for the fresh possibilities of a new chapter. This transition mirrors a wardrobe cleanse, akin to a change in seasons. It's a moment to assess what you have, what you're ready to release, what treasures you want to unearth, and where you can create space for the new additions to flourish.

In order for new goals, rituals, and memories to integrate into your life, it's essential to declutter and refresh. Here are some tips to guide you through the process of cleansing, refreshing, and resetting in preparation for the new year.

Out with the old, in with the new

Tap your memory

As we approach the year's end, take a moment to reflect. Browse through your camera roll, let the images spark memories. Skim through your calendar or diary, noting the events that shaped your days. If you keep a gratitude journal, flip through its pages, reliving the moments that filled your heart with gratitude over the past year.

Host a year in review

Make the most of your reflection by figuring out what to keep, carry forward, and leave behind. Thinking about all of the moments you conjured above, jot down:
· The ‘good things’ that you would like to take with you, and do more of
· The challenges you would like to leave behind
· The things you wish you could change – or introduce

Focus on what fits

The highlights of your year, the moments of joy, the themes of gratitude – what were they? What do they all have in common? Discovering the commonalities among your 'good things' can provide insights into how to invite more 'good things' into your life. For instance, do certain individuals consistently uplift your spirits? Perhaps consider initiating regular gatherings or outings with them. Have you found solace in leisurely Sundays as your preferred self-care ritual? Consider crafting a repertoire of new self-care practices to explore each Sunday (complete with extra sleep and cozy pajamas, naturally).

Discard what doesn’t serve you

Take those challenges you're ready to shed, rip them apart, scribble over them, crumple them tightly, and cast them into the flames. Bid them farewell. They're confined to 2023 as you step forward.

Look ahead

Resolutions often pose challenges, yet research reveals their enduring impact despite occasional setbacks. Studies show that setting resolutions increases the likelihood of change, especially with approach-oriented goals like improving sleep habits. Remember those Sunday sleep-ins? They're part of a self-care routine, an approach-based goal. Similarly, a brief bedtime meditation can also foster positive change. Resolutions needn't be monumental to enhance your wellbeing.

Finally, make a plan

According to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "a goal without a plan is just a wish." After reflecting on 2023 and envisioning your aspirations for 2024, strategize your initial move. Ensure it's tangible and achievable—a task you can swiftly cross off your list. Keep it manageable to secure a few early victories and maintain momentum. Perhaps it's as straightforward as communicating to your friends that Sundays are sacred for your personal time.

Good luck. And here’s to 2024 being your dreamiest year yet…
