In the glamorous world of social media, faces are front and centre. Beauty tips, get-ready-with-mes, style advice and skincare recommendations are everywhere. And you are presented with an ever-growing parade of products promising perfection. It’s super easy to get swept up in it, believing you need the latest trending product to achieve that fresh-faced glow. But social media doesn’t hold all the secrets. In fact, perhaps the biggest secret is this: beauty doesn’t come from a 10-step routine. And you can find that glow with a few simple steps – and a solid night’s sleep! 

The best remedies are free

Firstly, the simplest one in the book is also the easiest to find: water. Hydration is key to bright, plump skin that holds its elasticity. Drinking 2–3 litres a day helps flush out toxins from the body, which can contribute to a clearer complexion and overall radiance. Not to mention, strong nails and hair!

Secondly, the one closest to our heart, sleep is the most powerful ingredient we can find. It rejuvenates us from the inside, restores our skin, betters our mind and boosts our energy levels. A night of deep, restful sleep also diminishes dark circles, alleviates puffiness and has you waking up as fresh as a baby (almost!).

Don’t overcomplicate it

Beauty lies in simplicity. Using too many skincare products – or changing your products on a whim – can disrupt your skin’s balance and lead to irritation or breakouts. Dermatologists swear by the essentials: a cleanser to purify, a moisturizer to nourish, and a sunscreen to protect. As your skin matures, you can add an extra serum or active like retinol to help combat the signs of ageing. But there is little need for anything else, and anyone who tells you otherwise is likely earning a commission on it. So find the products that work for your skin, and look for something else worth watching on TikTok.

Perfection is a filter

The standards of beauty have drifted into a realm that isn’t even remotely real. Filters distort appearances so much that they can sometimes be used on purpose to conceal a creator’s identity! So, if our favourite influencers are unrecognisable without the filters on, we can never expect to look like that without them either. And holding ourselves up to the standards they create is an impossible ask.
